Philippine nurses are strongly advised to refrain from going to New Zealand unless they have passed the IELTS or OET in the Philippines and have completed the registration process by the NZ Nursing Council which they could do very well on their own.

The Embassy has noted the increasing number of nurses in New Zealand studying English to take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Occupational English Test (OET) on the notion that they would be able to pass these exams here more easily than in the Philippines. The Embassy wishes to remind everyone that the standards for these tests are the same wherever they may be administered. Moreover, many of these nurses also seem to be mistaken that entering and completing the study course here assures them of jobs as registered nurses in New Zealand. The Embassy wishes to emphasize that completing a course in New Zealand adds to one’s credentials, however, it is not a guarantee for a job as a registered nurse in this country. The Embassy wishes to point out that there have been many who have had to go back to the Philippines as they could not find jobs as registered nurses despite having spent so much money to get to New Zealand. Those who had gone back had either completed the course but did not pass the IELTS or OET, or passed the IELTS or OET but were unable to obtain the necessary recognition from the NZ Nursing Council.

To avoid getting into this situation, where one pays exorbitant fees and lands in such unfortunate circumstances, the Embassy urges those Philippine nurses interested in working in New Zealand to check the process of accreditation first so that all information and consequences are known to them. Details on International Registration may be found at the NZ Nursing Council website: www.nursingcouncil.org.nz. while information on living and working in New Zealand may be obtained from the New Zealand Immigration’s website: www.immigration.govt.nz.

GIOVANNI E.

The two stages of the application process are:

* Stage one, the application form is sent out, completed by the applicant and returned with the fee
NCNZ - their work experience requirement changes from time to time. I suggest that you email / call them directly to verify :

oseas@nursingcouncil.org.nz / + 64 4 3859589

2. CAP schools- again different CAP schools requires different length of work experience. (2009 trend is MOST CAP providers requires 2 or more years of work experience. You will have a limited choice of CAP provider if you have less than 2 years of work experience. Contact them individually for their requirements.

3. Work Application - ( 2009 trend= Private / Government hospitals prefer applicants with 2-3 or more years of work experience. Please bear in mind that you are competing for slots with other overseas applicants with heaps of work experience , NZ new graduates plus other kiwis that are returning to nursing. If you have less than 2 years of work experience you will have a slight difficulty in securing a job offer from a hospital. But there are still jobs from resthomes and other facilities.)

These are all trends based on the experiences of Nurse2nz forum members for 2009. Do not take my word for it. Its now time to apply for a permanent resident visa / permit assuming that your family is still in the Philippines . A NZ Permanent Resident receives free health care benefits , free or subsidized education and most of all you will not have a hard time securing bank loans / credit card if you're a Permanent Resident.

Step 1. Visit the www.immigration.govt.nz ...Download and study the EOI(Expression of Interest) guide and create an online EOI account .(Permanent Resident Application or Skilled Migrant Category as they call it is based on points system , current passing score is 140 pts...If you are a nurse , you need not worry coz for sure you can get more than 140 pts)...Complete the EOI and submit online . Pay 400nzd online by credit card.

note : Sa EOI , included na ang application ng husband/wife plus kids

Step 2. Wait for the EOI to be selected from the Pool , they will send you an email , letter or online change of status that your EOI was selected.

Step 3. After 2-3 weeks you will receive an email/letter from the VISA OFFICER called the ITA (Invitation to Apply) stating that you are invited to apply for Permanent Resident . Included in the letter are the required documents that you need to submit and a ITA form.(for some of the documents you can submit a certified true copy---you can have it certified in NZ at the Justice of Peace for free.) an original copy is needed for some of the documents

Step 4. Gather all the documents needed ---(refer to the letter of your VO for the reqt)

example :

1. Birth Certificate of everyone
2. marriage certificate
3. your IELTS test result , partners IELTS (5.0 or 6.5 if claiming bonus points ) and kids (IELTS 5.0 for kids ages 16 up)
4. complete medicals and xrays for everyone.
5. valid NBI and police clearance for everyone if kid is 16 yrs old above (must be less than 6 mos. old)
6. valid passports for everyone
7. NCNZ registration certificate , CAP school certificate , job contract with hospital
8. and mostly the same documents that you presented for your work permit application..

Submit the documents with the ITA form and pay 1400nzd as ITA fee.

Step 5. After 2 weeks or more , all the original documents that you submitted will be returned to you ....The waiting time begins...(wait for the approval in principle letter --- fastest time would be 6 weeks to 12 weeks or even more -depends on the visa officer) ...You will receive and email/letter that your application is approved in principle and you are instructed to pay the migrant levy tax of 300nzd /person at the nearest Immigration Office and submit passport for stamping.

Step 6. Pay the migrant levy tax and submit passport for visa stamping . The passport will be returned after a week or two... Viola you are now a New Zealand Permanent Resident . Send the passport back home to your husband/wife and kids , purchase a one-way airline ticket to NZ and let them fly to NZ. Pick them up at the airport and you are now a one big happy family.

note : Since you will be filing your EOI in New Zealand , your application will be handled by NZIS NZ branch... You will not deal with the New Zealand Embassy Manila branch thru the whole course of your application...Everything will be done/filed in NZ ... (except for your partners /kids medicals and xray )

before you leave for NZ

1. After the long wait you are now ready to fly to New Zealand. Here is a list of things to do before you leave .

Call the CAP provider (INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS MANAGER) and arrange for an airport pick up. A van driver will pick you up and you need to pay him 80NZD more or less.(Auckland to Rotorua --example lang)

Bring winter clothes (long sleeves , thick jackets etc) remember even if it is Summer Season in New Zealand the weather is too cold for us Pinoys.

Do your shopping here , clothes , shoes , Medicines etc ..or whatever you need to bring to NZ...remember you are only allowed 1 checked-in luggage at 20 kilos and one hand carried bag at 7 kilos ..So pack light ....bring only the essentials...

2 weeks before you leave , renew your NBI Clearance and secure a Police Clearance from your local police ..You need this for your Work Permit Application

Bring enough money to last you for 3 mos or more in New Zealand ..the more allowance the better. remember that Hostel stay costs around 125-150NZD per week . Meals around 4-5NZD per meal plus transportation and misc expenses! Do the MATH!

For your pocket money , it would be advisable to exchange your Peso to NZ dollar while you are still in the Philippines. (try to buy NZD sa ANZ Bank or HSBC Bank) . Second choice would be to bring US dollars . Avoid bringing your Peso to New Zealand (sobrang talo ka sa exchange rate doon)

Bring all necessary documents that you think you will need in NZ in the future

You may want to call your friendly cargo box forwarder (you cand send 1 balikbayan box 20x20x20 size --irregardless of weight at around 160-180nzd / box ) - if you still need to send some of your stuff to NZ . But send your stuff if you already have your work permit so that it would be tax free . ( Avoid sending food and agricultural products)

Pray and thank God that you made it this far....

more tips to come if we think of something worthwhile to post here....

STEP 5 : VISITORS VISA APPLICATION

You need to apply for a VISITORS VISA (click here) for the Application Form 1017(updated May 2009 form). And then continue working while waiting for you NCNZ and visa approval. Wouldn't it be nice if you will be arriving in New Zealand and you are well qualified to do your nursing job. And starting salary in New Zealand is dependent on your previous work experience , the longer work experience you have the larger your starting salary.

2. My IELTS score is 7.0 but I have a 6.5 score in one area, is that OK?

No. We suggest that you retake the IELTS.

3. I am an RN but my IELTS score is just 6.5 , can i apply for the Health Care Assistant course instead?

We suggest that you retake the IELTS and aim to get a band 7.0 score , you are a RN , why would you apply as a HCA???

4. Do I really need to take the Nursing Competency Assessment Program ( CAP)?

Yes.

5. How long does it take to finish the processing of all the requirements ?

It depends on how fast/accurate you submit your documents. But give yourself at least 9-12 months from the time you apply with the NCNZ to arrival in NZ.

6. How much does it cost, if I will do the processing on my own?

We estimate that if you have 400-450k PHP you will be safe . It includes tuition fee , NCNZ fees , IELTS , immunization status , medicals , visa fee , one way plane fare , misc fees , documentations , courier fees and enough baon for your board and lodging for 3 months in New Zealand .

7. How long does it take to finish the CAP program and the current waiting time for NCNZ license issuance / work permit issuance?

CAP takes around 6-8 weeks to finish (depending on school) . License issuance3-4 weeks plus work permit issuance 2-3 weeks .

8. Can I work while studying for the CAP or while waiting for the license/work permit ?

NO.

9. Are there any exams after the CAP?

NONE

10. How long does it take before my family can join me in New Zealand?

If you already have a working permit , expect to wait for at least 3 months to 6 months before your family can join you in NZ.

11. Do I need to have an agency to be able to register , apply for CAP , find work in New Zealand?

NO.

12. How long do I have to wait for my Nursing License, Annual Practicing Certificate and Job offer after the Competency program?

Be prepared to wait for at least 6 weeks before you can start working after the CAP.

Are you qualified?

Basic qualifications that you need to have

you are a licensed Registered Nurse in the Philippines and of good standing.

you have at least a relevant 24 MONTHS PAID POST REGISTRATION WORK EXPERIENCE (as recommended by NCNZ - so that you will have a good chance of securing a slot for CAP and work afterwards) --or email the NCNZ to verify.

you are of good health and character

you have an IELTS score of 7.0 in all areas

then if you are qualified then read on.............

a letter from NCNZ re Work Experience Requirement (Oct 2010)

It is recommended that you have at least 2 years work experience working as a
registered nurse before applying for New Zealand registration as this will help with
employment prospects.
